Dixon Celebrates Reading Month

During the month of March, Dixon ELA celebrated reading month with a series of guest readers from the community as well as students from Howard University.

The month long celebration ended with Dixon’s annual “Reader’s Theatre Program.” The program allows the students to show off their reading skills to their parents.

Reader’s Theatre is a theatre style in which the performers have no line memorization. With this style the students “perform” by reading scripts created from grade-level books or stories.  This is traditionally done without the use of costumes, props or sets.  Only vocal expression is used for the audience to understand the story.  Readers Theatre combines reading practice with performance.  Students use Reader’s Theatre to enhance their skill and confidence with reading aloud.

Students’ had fun reciting everything from the works of Maya Angelou to snippets from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark to funny poetry. They did an excellent job!
