STEM YOUTH LITERACY PROGRAM

stem academy 3

Dixon Educational Learning Academy has partnered with “Athletes for Charity.” Tata Technologies, and the Detroit Lions, to present the STEM Youth Literacy Program for Pre-K through 5th grade students. The objective of the program is to foster creative exposure and engagement of students to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), while also developing their skills in reading and writing. Students are recruited through an application process at the beginning of the school year. New students are accepted as the need arises, usually in the middle of the school year.

Members of the Detroit Lions and Tata Technologies serve as STEM Volunteers/Readers and meet with selected students for 30 minutes to 1 hour, to deliver brand new books, begin discussing the STEM subject of the month, and engage the students in completing projects. Each month students are assigned a book to read and must complete a vocabulary development and drawing assignment or an essay on the reading materials.

Students are rewarded for active participation, attendance, and academic progress throughout the school year! Incentives include tickets to Lions, Pistons, and Tiger games; autographed items from sports professionals; LEGO products to foster hands-on learning; and field trips.
